How it all started.

Why tutoring?

It was towards the end of my second semester of my 3rd year of university, just before restrictions were easing, where I discovered Twitch live streaming. Rather than streaming myself playing video games, like 99.9% of the streamers on the platform do, I found out through a healthy bit of procrastination, that people were using live streaming as a form of accountability. I had to check it out. After spending about a week on dwelling whether it would be a good idea or not, I pressed the "Go Live" button, and never looked back. My first ever live stream, March 1st 2021. For the uninitiated, what I was essentially doing, was going live, in front of a camera, for the world to see, that I was doing the work I was supposed to be doing for my upcoming exams (and at the time also weekly assessments) in April, so that I could achieve high grades which would count towards my final graduating grade. I used this technique, and not only having made tremendous progress in my focus, grades and overall productivity, I had also made a lot of new friends and built a community around likeminded people, hungry for that focus we all seem to be just out of arms reach from. What I had realised throughout all of this, was how well I was able to convey my thought processes. I did so in such a way, such that anyone, even those who weren't even interested in mathematics, were so engaged, that they were able to ask relevant questions (to which I had all the answers to) and enabling them to engage in discussions, creating a dynamic I had not yet discovered in my (by then) 22 years of age.

After having a thought about it, I realised that I could be an educator, specifically a maths educator/tutor, and I knew that I could change the lives of many, if I implemented my newly discovered dynamic teaching style where I am able to deconstruct any topic to its core, or even shift perspective, so that the idea can be understood with ease.

Using my iPad, I love to write, draw, highlight and sketch all of my thoughts (I realised I did this on my twitch streams out of habit) to make the experience as visual as possible. This enables engagement with the student, by speaking out what I am thinking, thus encouraging the same from the student. With a lack of conveyance and implementation of active recall in schools, especially mathematics, my ultimate aim is to be able to create visually pleasing mathematics tutorials for my students, such that they are able to start using the techniques I teach, to further their understanding of any topic from easy to complex, such that when challenged in an exam, they are able to deconstruct difficult questions (whether it is challenging personally or generally) in such a way, to be able to tackle the problem in an easy to solve method which we figure out works for the student.

In August of 2021, well after my exam season had ended and was moving away from streaming, spending my free time outdoors again, I ended up finding a freelance position as a maths and German tutor (I focused primarily on Maths) with a company by the name of GoStudent. I personally believe that this was the best way for me to step foot into the industry of private tutoring, as with the 10 students I had taught within my time from the beginning of the school year, until the end, I was able to grow my skillset further than I could have ever imagined, made meaningful impact to my students, and prove to myself that I can in fact teach maths to anyone. My students ranged from children who just needed to pass their exam after failing the first time (and passing the second time with me as their tutor), to A level students who wanted that A* over just an A. Each student was different, and I was able to adapt to each students' needs in such a way, that every single lesson had an impact, even if we did spend the entire lesson on two questions, the input from the student, and the results just the week after, showed how much of a contributing factor I had been in steering my student in the right direction.

After my 4th year had concluded and I said my farewells to all my students, I was ready to work another year with GoStudent, but I had just signed a contract as an amazon delivery driver until I found something more concrete in the corporate world, and with the uncertainty of a job like that, I could not continue with my passion. By sparing the details and a few months too many at amazon, we are now in the present moment, May 2023. I currently reside in Aviemore, and I have done so for the past month and a bit, where I am working as an outdoor educator, instructor and guide, where I am able to maintain my friendly, warmhearted demeanor and attention to detail to give each customer the experience they signed up for and desire, and leaving forever wanting more.

As for future plan, I wish to use this website, as a landing page for all new potential students, parents of students, or just those who like to be nosey, to have people be a part of my journey, perhaps even getting to know new students for the upcoming academic year, in order to be able to support myself with my further studies for my degree in Data Science, which will be starting in October 2023, so by then I should know a few of your names.
